Most homeowners don't think about their window wells until water starts showing up in the basement. By then, the damage is already done. Old, shifted, or poorly drained wells are one of the most common reasons basements flood during heavy rain - and it's one of the easiest things to get ahead of before the storms roll in.
We've been out replacing window wells in all kinds of conditions lately. Some are pulled away from the foundation. Some have drainage issues that have been quietly getting worse for years. Others are just old enough that they've lost their shape and can't do the job anymore. Every situation is a little different, but the fix is the same - get it done right before the weather turns.
When we install a new well, we're not just swapping out the metal. We make sure the well is properly anchored to the foundation, gravel is laid for drainage, and everything sits the way it's supposed to. For egress window wells specifically, there's no room for shortcuts - that window has to function as an emergency exit, and the well around it needs to support that. A solid installation holds its position and keeps water moving away from the window, not toward it.
Window well covers are part of the equation too. A good cover keeps debris and standing water out while still letting light through. We see a lot of wells with no cover at all, or covers that have cracked and warped over time. That's an easy thing to fix, and it goes a long way when the rain really comes down.
